The Pigment Pictures is the first publication by Alice Anna Ford and Unthing Press.
Developed through painting on printed 35mm archival prints, collage and typewritten text, the book gathers multiple methods into a bound and unique artefact. Across over 100 A4 pages, scenes extend uninterrupted through a lay-flat binding — allowing colour to move seam to seam.
Inspired by the artists visit to Gerhard Richters exhibition in 2022 and the publication works of Tauba Auerbach’s Diagonal Press and Caroline Schneider’s Sternerg Press, The Pigment Pictures depicts a fictional story of a lone traveller encountering three chromatic islands that mimic the creation process in blue, orange and yellow.
Painted surfaces, film scans, and drawings treat the process as outcome, with direct scans of each page true to the handmade manuscript.
Labelled YOU throughout the typewritten text, the reader in invited to becomes part of each painting.
The result is not a linear narrative but a layered codex — an archive of encounters held in vibrant and saturated succession.
Published as a finite edition of 100 with each publication signed and individually numbered.
The Pigment Pictures is the first publication belonging to Unthing Press, an artist-led publishing house opened to the public at Margaret River Regions Open Studios in September, 2026.
